New is a \u2018relative\u2019 description.\u00a0 Living rural, anyone existing here for less than 10 years is <em>\u2018new\u2019<\/em>, and anyone here, even for 20 years, is still <em>\u2018newer\u2019<\/em> than those living here before them.\u00a0 This paradigm is not stagnant.\u00a0 It ebbs and flows like the tides. As one resident passes or moves away, history shifts and the least <em>\u2018new\u2019<\/em> person becomes a method of measurement, a source of reference: <em>\u201cRemember those people who used to live at the Smith\u2019s house?\u00a0 What was their name \u2026the ones that had 3 dogs?\u201d\u00a0 <\/em>The newly attritioned oracle would respond: \u201cYou\u2019re thinking of the Jones\u2019 house and those were the Parkers.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Out here, addresses are known by the names of the residents &#8211;not necessarily the current occupants but the original tenants. Residential history is often used as a navigation tool: <em>\u2018Follow this road past the Smith\u2019s house and take a right by the Jones place; the Marley\u2019s will be just around the corner&#8230;\u201d (Just around the corner<\/em> is a relative term when you\u2019re traversing acreage).   <em>\u201cYou mean the Randall house down the lane?\u201d\u00a0<\/em>  <em>\u201cNo, they live there now, but the Smiths were there before them.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/tahoecall.com\/social\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/pexels-suzy-hazelwood-3682153-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-995\" width=\"167\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tahoecall.com\/social\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/pexels-suzy-hazelwood-3682153-1-scaled.jpg 1973w, https:\/\/tahoecall.com\/social\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/pexels-suzy-hazelwood-3682153-1-231x300.jpg 231w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 167px) 100vw, 167px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In our valley, we accept these historic residents as authorities. They provide current and past information spiced with bits of unsolicited gossip. We accept what they say <em>must<\/em> be true; after all, they\u2019ve lived here longer than anyone. As sole witnesses of our valley\u2019s past; it doesn\u2019t matter if memory doesn\u2019t serve them as well as they think. We acknowledge the details and topics of common discourse in our small existence aren\u2019t \u2018life and death\u2019. Still, this complete acceptance of information and opinion as fact got me thinking about how we as humans\u2014in a larger venue\u2014communicate, and, just what is it that makes us blindly accept and believe what others tell us?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><strong>\u201c<em>COMMUNICATION IS ONLY 10% VERBAL\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/tahoecall.com\/social\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/pexels-ylanite-koppens-3123898.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1021\" width=\"423\" height=\"282\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A teacher ignited a class I took once with this revelation. I hadn\u2019t thought much about that statement until lately when Covid hit and mask-wearing reminded me how much we rely on facial expression to clarify and understand the intent of what is being said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0Communication has many layers and applications. Over time, our minds develop tools to help process what we hear, see, and experience. \u00a0These tools and methods are not stagnant; they grow and adjust as we progress through life.\u00a0 Our techniques are unique to us; intrinsic and interwoven into our being. Akin to breathing&#8211;we\u2019re not always consciously aware of their existence. Yet they are constantly there; adjusting, accommodating, filtering and processing the relevance and significance of information we receive to determine:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>\u2018Is it threatening?<\/li><li>Do I believe this?<\/li><li>Is it truthful?<\/li><li>Is it of value to me?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cCOMMUNICATION IS VISUAL\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>&nbsp;<em>\u201cLook me in the eye and tell me that\u2026\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We need to see a person\u2019s face; to \u2018read\u2019 them; to &#8216;see&#8217;, are they telling me the truth?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><em>\u201cI saw it with my own eyes\u201d<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Visual messages can be powerful and linger, often longer than verbal ones.\u00a0 However, relying\u00a0on visual communication alone makes us more susceptible to deceit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><strong><em>\u201cCOMMUNICATION IS PHYSICAL<\/em>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"224\" height=\"411\" src=\"https:\/\/tahoecall.com\/social\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/hug.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1019\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tahoecall.com\/social\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/hug.jpg 224w, https:\/\/tahoecall.com\/social\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/hug-164x300.jpg 164w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><\/li><li><\/li><li><\/li><li><\/li><li><em>A firm handshake<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Society has associated this physical action with legitimacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><em>A Hug<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This physical act communicates more than words are able.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0Communication is not infallible.\u00a0 Like anything else, it is vulnerable to corruption.\u00a0 It can be used to con, lie, cheat, harm, delude, control, and deceive. Those filters and processors we\u2019ve acquired throughout our lives; those tried and true methods we\u2019ve developed to process what we hear, to protect us seamlessly from falsehoods; those filters&#8211;so akin to breathing\u2014are not perfect.\u00a0 They can be manipulated by the simplest or most complex of things and people; adept masters of the con.\u00a0 No one is immune to this threat; we are all susceptible:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <em>\u201cThey just asked me for my address\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em>\u201cThey said they were calling from the bank and of course I gave them my account number\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;We <em>want<\/em> to believe what we are told \u2013especially if the message is coming from someone we love, trust, or agree with:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><em>They share my values\u2026<\/em><\/li><li><em>They tell it like it is\u2026<\/em><\/li><li><em>They just speak to me and what I believe\u2026<\/em><\/li><li><em>I can see they are a good person\u2026<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Communication is the key that winds our moral clockworks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"336\" height=\"486\" src=\"https:\/\/tahoecall.com\/social\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/clock.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tahoecall.com\/social\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/clock.jpg 336w, https:\/\/tahoecall.com\/social\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/clock-207x300.jpg 207w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><\/li><li><\/li><li><\/li><li><\/li><li><em>We trust the messenger<\/em><\/li><li><\/li><li><em>We believe the message<\/em><\/li><li><\/li><li><em>We accept it as truth<\/em><\/li><li><\/li><li><em>We act on the information<\/em><\/li><li><\/li><li><em>In our hearts, we know we\u2019re right<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No one wants to be victimized, duped, lied to, or deceived. Yet, we all have the potential to be.
